How to Make Potato Patties
- Add Gouda shredded cheese, flour, large egg and green onions to the mashed potato mixture.
- Measure out a heaping ¼ cup of mashed potatoes and shape into a ½ inch thick by 3 inch wide round small patties.
- Dip rounds in egg and then in bread crumbs.
- Set stove top to medium heat, heat large skillet with vegetable oil brown both sides.
- Place patties on a cookie sheet lined with paper towels.
- Keep warm in a preheated 300° oven.
How to Make Loaded Baked Potato Patties
Who doesn’t love a good loaded baked potato? These smashed potato patties already have the making of a delicious potato patty. Cheese, green onion, and potato. All that’s left is the bacon! Cook bacon until it’s crispy enough to crumble into small piece. Mix the bacon pieces into the mashed potato mixture, and form the best potato cakes! NOTE: You can also use bacon bits.
How to Store Leftover Potato Cakes
Place leftover potato patties in a single layer with parchment paper between each layer in an airtight container. Will stay fresh in the refrigerator up to 3 days.
How to Reheat Cold Mashed Potatoes
- AIR FRYER: Preheat air fryer to 375° for 3-5 minutes. Place potato pancakes into the air fryer basket, making sure they don’t overlap. Set timer for 5 minutes, flip, continue cooking until desired crispness.
- OVEN: Preheat oven to 350°. Place potato patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake 10 minutes per side or until hot in the center.

HOW TO MAKE LEFTOVER SMASHED POTATO PATTIES IN THE AIR FRYER
- Preheat air fryer to 400° for 10 minutes.
- Place patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. While the air fryer is heating, place patties in the freezer. This will help the patter keep their shape during the cooking process.
- Place patties in air fryer basket, only 4 at a time making sure to not overcrowd.
- Cook undisturbed for 12 minutes. Repeat with remaining patties.
HOW TO FREEZE POTATO CAKES
Place leftover potato patties in single layers with parchment paper between each layer in an airtight freezer safe container. Potatoes will stay fresh in the freezer up to 3 months. Thaw frozen patties overnight in the refrigerator.

Leftover Mashed Potato Patties

Ingredients
- 2½ cups leftover mashed potatoes
- ½ cup Gouda cheese, shredded
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons green onion, chopped
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- ¾ cup fine dry bread crumbs
- 1 to 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Instructions
- In a medium bowl stir together mashed potatoes, cheese, flour, green onions and pepper.
- Measure out 8 heaping ¼ cup portions and form potato mixture into 8 patties ½-inch thick and 3-inches round.
- Place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Preheat oven to 300°.
- Pour half the oil into a large skillet heat on medium-low.
- In a shallow dish whisk together the egg and water.
- Place bread crumbs in another shallow dish.
- Dip patties in the egg then in the bread crumbs, turning to coat both sides.
- Add patties (only 4 at a time) in the heated skillet.
- Cook until bottoms are golden brown.
- Watch the heat, you don't want the patties getting dark before they're warmed through.
- Turn over and brown the other side making sure not to get th patties too dark.
- Transfer to a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Keep warm in preheated oven.
- Cook remaining patties using the remaining oil.
