WHAT IS A SPICE HERB CANDLE?
The spicy herb butter candle is the perfect blend of herbs and spices mixed into the best butter and then made into a candle for the ultimate party experience from a party appetizer.
Spicy Herb Butter Candle is the best party appetizer! A twist on everyday buttered bread. The butter is seasoned with fresh parsley, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and crushed pepper flakes. So, the butter candle is not only fun but delicious, too! Looking to add a little spark to your next dinner party? Try an edible candle!
Make several different candles (flavor variation ideas below) and spread them around your appetizer table or charcuterie board. If you add several edible candles, you can reduce the size of a medium candle by half and even more for a small candle. The great thing about a homemade butter candle is not only that it is a fun spin-off of retro food trends but also that it’s a delicious dip for pieces of bread that you can make your own way!
How to Make a Spicy Herb Butter Candle
This interactive food is both a unique appetizer and a cozy winter side dish that will impress all your guests.
BUTTER CANDLE INGREDIENTS (full printable recipe below)
- butter
- fresh parley
- garlic powder
- Italian seasoning
- crushed red pepper flakes
SPICEY HERB BUTTER INSTRUCTIONS
Add the butter, parsley, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes to a deep pot. Simmer on medium-low for about 10 minutes or until the butter solids have slightly browned.
Pour hot butter through a fine strainer lined with cheesecloth.
Using the supplied stickers, press a sticker onto the bottom of the container for the butter candle. Make sure it’s centered. Press the wick and wick holder onto the sticker. Depending on the length of the wick (I used an 8-inch), cut the wick 3 inches taller than the top of the container. Use something that is longer than the top of the container. Wrap the wick around the item (I used a small dowel or fat skewer).
Pour strained hot butter into the container. Refrigerate overnight.
The next day, remove the dowel, cut the wick about ½ inches from the top of the candle, and tear away the container, leaving the bottom secure. Place on a platter, charcuterie board, or any flat surface. Add pieces of bread (preferably sour dough) cut into small pieces around the candle. NOTE: The candle will take about 20 minutes for the butter to melt enough for dipping. ENJOY!
The Best Butter for Making a Spicy Herb Butter Candle
Since butter is the star of this appetizer, I recommend using high-quality butter. I used Kerrygold Irish Butter.
The Best Bread for Dipping into a Butter Candle
- First, let’s start with what I don’t recommend: a sourdough round. While the look of a candle sitting in the middle of a pre-sliced sourdough round looks amazing, it’s really not practical. Pulling a piece of bread that is still attached will cause the candle to spill the melted butter.
- Sourdough is by far the best bread for the job. It won’t break off and fall into the butter, and the taste is amazing. The bread comes in different flavors (jalapeno, cheese, olive). I RECOMMEND cutting the pieces of bread into small pieces that are big enough to handle but small enough for one bite. This helps with two things: the bread can easily get into the melted butter, and double-dipping is easy.
The Best Size and Type of Container for Making a Butter Candle
So, this is what I discovered. The wider the candle, the better. Using a wide container will allow for more dipping surface. WHAT DO I MEAN BY WIDE? The container I used was a 26-ounce Paper ice cream container. The opening measured 4½ inches. I also chose a container that was straight down and not tapered, so using a paper cup was not an option for me. If you want to make smaller candles but still want the squatty look, Ice cream cups are a good option.
DO I HAVE TO USE A PAPER CONTAINER FOR MY EDIBLE BUTTER CANDLE?
Yes, unfortunately, once your guests start dipping, the level of butter will decrease, exposing the burning wick and forcing their hands to dip deeper into the container. BUT, there is also a No to this answer. If you choose a container wide enough where the wick will be out of the way of the guests dipping into the butter, then I say go for it. A vintage bowl would be amazing! You can also keep a close eye on the wick and trim it throughout the party.
IS THE WICK FOOD SAFE?
YES, I used a natural cotton wick that was dipped in soy beeswax. The wax will burn clean and non-toxic, No lead and zinc so there’s no bad smell during burning. No Black Smoking and Burning Stability when lit. CLICK HERE TO SEE WHAT WICK KIT I ORDERED→SOY BEESWAX CANDLE MAKING WICKS (8-inch)

One of the simplest ways to incorporate this flavorful ingredient is by melting a small amount in a hot pan before adding your protein or vegetables. EDIBLE BUTTER CANDLE FLAVOR VARIATION IDEAS
- GARLIC BUTTER CANDLE: Roasted garlic would be delicious! CLICK HERE FOR THE RECIPE→ HOMEMADE ROASTED GARLIC. Make the garlic ahead of melting the butter. Add the butter and garlic to a saucepan (½ bulbs per pound of butter). ANOTHER OPTION: Add the zest from one lemon to your garlic butter.
- SUGAR CINNAMON DESSERT BUTTER CANDLE: Add 4 teaspoons ground cinnamon, ½ cup light brown sugar, and ½ cup granulated sugar to 1 cup butter and follow cooking instructions. Roll hardened butter candle in a sugar and cinnamon mixture. Serve with mini cinnamon toast pieces. Cut bread into slices, spread butter on the slices, and sprinkle on cinnamon and sugar. Pop under the broiler and cook until toasted
- EVERYTHING BAGEL BUTTER CANDLE: There are three options: Roll the hardened candle in the everything bagel seasoning, add the seasoning to the melted butter, or do both: Roll the candle in the everything bagel seasoning and add the seasoning to the melted butter.
- FRESH HERBS BUTTER CANDLE: TIP: I added herbs to my candle; once the butter had boiled enough to release the flavors, I strained the butter. WHY DID I STRAIN MY BUTTER? This is totally a personal preference. I hate biting into a herb like rosemary. I love the flavor but not the eating of the plant ( I hope that makes sense). A good option is to leave the rosemary on the stem. That way, it’s easy to remove. For a fun look, once the butter has hardened and removed from its vessel, roll in finely chopped fresh or dried herbs.

The candle can be made days in advance of your gathering, releasing some of the stress of entertaining. TIP: If you are expecting a large group (over 10), I suggest making several dipping stations with a variety of candle flavors and candle sizes. ENJOY! 💗Sheryl
