For the Pirate Ring Decorated Pretzel and Printable Pirate Pretzel:
- Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
- Pour red candy and vegetable shortening into a medium microwave safe bowl.
- Heat on high 1 minute, stir until melted and creamy. If candy still has lumps, continue heating at 60% heat in 30 second intervals until the candy is completely melted and creamy.
- Place a pretzel on a sheet of parchment paper. With a pencil mark the top of the pretzel and where you want the candy to end on the pretzel. Turn the parchment paper over and pour the melted candy between the two lines.
- Roll pretzel in the melted red candy, tap off any excess, and immediately pour red sugar sprinkles over wet candy.
- Place on prepared cookie sheet. Once all the pretzels have been coated, place the cookie sheet in the refrigerator until the candy has hardened (about 10 minutes).
- PIRATE RING DECORATED PRETZELS: OPTIONAL: Create a place for the pretzels to stand. I like using rice in a wide container that is at least half the depth of the pretzels.
- Scrape remaining red melted candy back into the microwave safe bowl and melt again.
- Dip the back side of the pirate ring in the melted candy and slide ring onto the decorated pretzel and place in a container filled with rice. Put the container with the pretzels in the refrigerator until candy has hardened (about 10 minutes)
- Pour black candy and shortening into a medium microwave safe bowl. Heat on high 1 minute, stir until there are no lumps and the candy is creamy. If there are still lumps, continue heating at 60% in 30 second intervals.
- Transfer melted black candy to a squeeze bottle. Add a thin line of candy in an angle to represent the strap of an eye patch.
- Add the patch to one side of the strap. Place pretzel in rice. Once all the pretzels have been decorated, put the container of pretzels in the refrigerator until candy has hardened (about 10 minutes).

How Early Can I Decorate Pretzels?
One of the best things about decorated pretzels (aside from the taste) is the convenience of being able to make them in advance of your party. It’s every hostesses dream to be able to make something this tasty before the craziness of the party prep starts. Ultimately taking some of the stress away from hosting a party. These adorable pretzels can be made as early as a week before the party. The key is making sure (after the candy has hardened) they stay fresh is to store them in an airtight container.
How to Add Flavor to the Melting Candy
You can purchase candy melts in a variety of colors. Unless you purchase the chocolate candy melts the colored ones are vanilla flavored. While they’re not bad on their own, below you will find some ideas on how to pump up the flavor. NOTE: IF YOU ADD TOPPINGS THE PRETZELS WILL NOT FIT IN THE PRINTABLE PRETZEL HOLDER.
• SPICES: Spice up your candy melts with ground cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice, apple pie spice and just about any spice you can think of. Eggnog Pretzels for Christmas or Pumpkin Latte Pretzels for Thanksgiving.
• CAKE MIX: Add a little cake mix to the melted candy for a delicious cake batter flavor. Like these Birthday Cake Pretzels.
○ ¼ cup dry cake mix to 1 (12 ounce) bag candy melts.
• FREEZE DRIED FRUIT: Dip whatever you’re coating with candy and while the candy is still wet dip into crushed freeze dried fruit. Like these Apple Pie Pretzels.
• OILS OR FLAVORINGS: Using either of these products will transform vanilla candy into a fun creation. Be careful and don’t add too much. YOU CAN ALWAYS ADD MORE…..About ½ teaspoon of flavoring or ¼ teaspoon of oil per bag of candy.
• TOPPINGS: Create different combos with toppings like toasted coconut, mini chocolate chips, chopped nuts, dried fruit, and mini M&M’s.
• CARAMEL: Before adding a candy coating add a caramel coating or swirl of caramel. Like with these Tiger Tail Pretzels or Unicorn Pretzels.
• ESPRESSO POWDER: Create a mocha flavored treat when using chocolate candy and add a tablespoon of espresso powder.

- CAKE DECORATION: Use a serrated knife and cut the pretzel rods the height of a layered cake, decorate pretzels and place them around the outside of a frosted layered cake. BAM!
- PARTY FAVOR: Hand out as party favors. You can purchase cellophane bags made specifically for pretzels. Add a thank you tag and you’re set!
- CENTERPIECE: Create a centerpiece! Fill containers (like jars or buckets) with the decorated pretzels and line them down the center of a table. Perfect for a kids birthday party!
