Semi Homemade Black and White Halloween Cupcakes

Semi Homemade Black and White Halloween Cupcakes | Create these easy creepy cupcakes for your next Halloween Party, Fall Festival or Bake Sale. With the perfect combination of vanilla and chocolate cake, and then topped with a bakery white frosting, you know this cupcake is a winner! Add a touch of spookiness with fun Spider Cupcake Toppers from Wilton found at Target.
No one will ever know that these fun Semi Homemade Black and White Halloween Cupcakes started with a cake mix. Of course you can’t go wrong with homemade frosting! The frosting is just like bakery frosting easy to decorate with and doesn’t have to be refrigerated. Perfect for Halloween Parties!
Once the batter is separated (refer to the recipe) and one is colored black, add one tablespoon of black batter.
If you don’t have time to make frosting you can find icing from Wilton in the Halloween section of Target along with sugar sprinkles and a jar of assorted sprinkles.

The cupcakes are not only delicious but fun too! With a honeycomb spider cupcake topper (from Target), a printable sign (see below) and a spider ring! The kids will run to get one of these cupcakes! Cut out a black circle larger then the print out and attach with white glue or double stick tape to the back of the printed circle. Tape or glue to a popsicle stick. To make the popsicle stick black, spray paint with Wilton Black Color Mist.
Black & White Cupcakes
Ingredients
For the Cupcakes:
- 1 boxed white cake mix (plus ingredients on the box to make cake)
- 2 tablespoons Dutch process cocoa powder
- black food coloring paste
- black sprinkles
- cupcake topper (template below)
For the Fluffy White Frosting:
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 12 ounces frozen whipped topping, thawed
- 1 cup confectioners' sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
Instructions
For the Cupcakes:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Line 18 muffin cups with paper liners; set aside.
- Prepare cake mix according to package directions.
- Remove one-third of batter to a small bowl.
- To remaining two-thirds batter, add cocoa powder and desired amount of black food coloring. Beat at medium speed until well combined.
- Beginning and ending with black batter, alternately spoon about 1 tablespoon of each batter into muffin cups, filling about two-thirds full.
- Bake for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let cool in pans for 10 minutes.
- Remove from pans, and let cool completely on wire racks.
- Pipe fluffy white frosting onto tops of cupcakes, sprinkle with black sprinkles and top with cupcake topper. HERE is the template for the HALLOWEEN CUPCAKE TOPPER .
For the Fluffy White Frosting:
- Combine cream cheese and butter.
- Beat until smooth.
- Beat in whipped topping, confectioners' sugar, and almond extract until smooth.
- Pipe onto the tops of the cupcakes.
- Decorate according the instructions above.
