How to Make Black Widow Caramel Apples
MAKE YOUR OWN GOURMET CARAMEL APPLES with only FOUR ingredients! How to make these Halloween Caramel Apples. Apples, Wrapples (caramel), melting candy, and sprinkles. Wrapples are perfect for kids! Becasue there’s NO DIPPING IN HOT SUGAR! Now the kids can help make the Halloween party treats. —FULL PRINTABLE RECIPE BELOW—
INGREDIENTS
•APPLES: Sour apples like Granny Smith, Braeburn, Pink Lady, and Cortland are the perfect choice. The sourness of the apple paired with the sweetness of the caramel and candy coating create the perfect chewy caramel apple.
•CARAMEL: FIRST CHOICE—WRAPPLES: Wrapples are flat sheets of caramel. The caramel sheets make it quick and easy to make fresh caramel apples. Just wrap caramel wrappers around fresh apples, add a wooden stick and heat. When the caramel becomes warm it will coat the apple. Follow the package instructions. Wrapples are found in the produce department by the apple display. SECOND CHOICE—HOMEMADE CARAMEL: I love the deep rich caramel flavor these apples offer. With ingredients like dark corn syrup, maple syrup and molasses your know you’re getting the best caramel apple recipe. CLICK HERE FOR THE RECIPE→OLD FASHIONED CARAMEL APPLES
•RED AND BLACK MELTING CANDY: Candy Melts, Sweetshop Melt’ems, and Sweet Tooth Fairy….any brand will work for this recipe.
•SPRINKLES: Black and red sugar sprinkles are the best option. The fine grain will cover any imperfections and offers a nice sweet crunch.
INSTRUCTIONS
•CARAMEL—Remove apple stems, wash and dry—preheat oven to 200°. Remove the paper from one Wrapple at a time—press caramel wrap over top and around the sides of the apple. Stretch the caramel around the bottom to cover the apple completely. Place on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet. Insert wooden stick into the top of the apple. Repeat for remaining apples. Heat in oven 3 minutes—allow to cool completely before decorating.
•BLACK LAYER—Pour black Meltables and shortening in a microwave safe tall glass container—wide enough to plunge the apples. Heat 1 minute on high power, stir if not melted continue in 30 second increments at 60% power until melted and creamy. Plunge one apple at a time in the melted candy—shake off excess, scrape bottom on the side of the jar—immediately add the black sugar sprinkles. Place on parchment paper lined cookie sheet. NOTE: If some of the apples have puddles of candy at the bottom, simply transfer them to a clean sheet of parchment paper on a cookies sheet. Place Coated (caramel, melted candy, and sugar sprinkles) apples in the refrigerator 10 minutes to harden.
•RED LAYER—In a small bowl, melt red candy 1 minute on high power, stir if the candy needs more time, continue in 30 second increments at 60% power until candy is melted and when stirred creamy. Transfer melted candy to a squeeze bottle with the tip cut a little wider than the original size (se photo). DECORATING—Start at the top of the apples using the squeeze bottle nozzle to move down the sides to look like dripping blood. IMMEDIATELY add the red sugar sprinkles. Continue with remaining apples. —SAVE LEFTOVER RED CANDY— Place coated apples in the refrigerator 10 minutes to harden.
•SPIDER—It’s the little things that can bring a Halloween Party Treat together. For these Black Widow Caramel Apples it’s the spider. You can use candy melts to make your own spiders. I chose the easy way and used plastic spiders. Reheat the leftover red melted candy (still in the squeeze bottle) 30 seconds, add a dollop where you want the spider (preferably on the red), hold in place until candy has hardened. ANOTHER SPIDER OPTION— Simply slide a spider ring down the caramel apple stick. ENJOY!🍏
