How to Make Grass
- FROSTING
- Add a layer of green frosting first before adding the grass, then you don’t have to spend tons of time piping grass.
- Use a large (grass) piping tip #234
- COCONUT
- Instead of piping grass frosting, still add a layer of green frosting and then sprinkle green coconut on top. Scroll down to find out how to color coconut.
- SPRINKLES
- Still add a layer of green frosting and then add green jimmy sprinkles.
How to Make Dirt
- Hold back a chocolate cupcake
- Crumble it up and sprinkle it on top
HOW TO MAKE A HOMEMADE CIRCUS TRAIN CUPCAKE PULL APART
- Place 12 cupcakes close together on an oblong cake board.
- Add green frosting to the tops of all the cupcakes.
- Choose your method of grass (preferably the same color as the bottom green layer)
- Green Jimmies, Green Coconut or Frosting.
- For the frosting, add the remaining frosting to a large piping bag fitted with Wilton #234 tip.
- In an up and down motion make grass.
- Crumble up an unfrosted cupcake for the dirt.
- Add a dirt trail for the train.
- Add colorful sprinkles and dollops of colored frosting (red, yellow and blue).
- Place the train, balloons, clowns and happy birthday sign.

36 Homemade Cupcakes—18-24 Semi Homemade Cupcakes
This fun pull apart is perfect for your little ones birthday party,

Ingredients
For the Homemade Devil's Food Cupcakes:
- 3/4 cup unsweetened Dutch process cocoa powder
- 3/4 cup hot water
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1-1/4 teaspoons salt
- 1-1/2 cups unsalted butter
- 2-1/4 cups sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup sour cream
For the Semi Homemade Devil's Food Cupcakes:
- 1 (15.25 ounce) Devil's Food Cake Mix
TWO OPTIONS:
- Add the ingredients listed on the box *OR*
- 2/3 cup hot water
- 2/3 cup dark cocoa powder
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup sour cream
For the Bakery White (Green) Frosting:
- 1 cup shortening
- 1½ teaspoons clear vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon almond extract
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 3 to 4 tablespoons milk
- green gel food coloring ( I used electric green)
- Optional gel colors (red, yellow and blue)
- Optional Sprinkles
Instructions
For the Homemade Devil's Food Cupcakes:
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- Line muffin tins with 36 cupcake liners.
- Whisk together cocoa and hot water until smooth.
- In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- Melt butter with sugar in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring to combine.
- Remove from heat, and pour into a mixing bowl.
- With an electric mixer on medium-low speed, beat until mixture is cooled, 4 to 5 minutes.
- Add eggs, one at a time, beating until each is incorporated, scraping down sides of bowl as needed.
- Add vanilla, then cocoa mixture, and beat until combined.
- Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture in two batches, alternating with the sour cream, and beating until just combined after each. Fill cupcake liners 2/3 full.
- Bake 17 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.
For the Semi Homemade Cupcakes:
- You have TWO options: Make cupcakes according to the package directions *OR*
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- Line muffin cups with 18 cupcake liners.
- Whisk together the hot water and cocoa until smooth.
- In a large mixing bowl add the cake mix, oil, eggs, sour cream and cocoa mixture.
- Mix together until creamy.
- Using an ice cream scoop, fill liner 2/3 full.
- Bake 17-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool completely before frosting.
For the Bakery White (green) Frosting:
- Add the shortening to a medium mixing bowl. Beat until shortening is light and fluffy.
- Add extracts and beat until incorporated into the shortening.
- Add the sugar 1 cup at a time; beat until smooth between each addition.
- Add food coloring.
- Add milk only if frosting is too thick.
- Drizzle in 1 tablespoon at a time until the frosting reaches spreading or piping consistency.
Putting it All Together:
- Place 12 cupcakes close together on an oblong cake board.
- Add green frosting to the tops of all the cupcakes.
- Choose your method of grass (preferably the same color as the bottom green layer)
- Green Jimmies, Green Coconut or Frosting.
- For the frosting, add the remaining frosting to a large piping bag fitted with Wilton #234 tip.

Notes
The recipe for the cupcake batter makes 36 cupcakes. I used one third of the batter to make 12 cupcakes and froze the rest. Or....if you have a lot of guests you can make a pull apart for the kids and serve the remaining cupcakes on the side.
