How to Transform a Dollar Tree Dollhouse into a Haunted House Cake Topper
HALLOWEEN HOUSE CAKE TOPPER MATERIALS
To craft your spooky house cake topper, you will need a few materials to bring your haunted vision to life. Gather the supplies listed below. With these supplies in hand, you’ll be ready to move on to Step 1: Doll House Makeover. FULL PRINTABLE TUTORIAL BELOW ON HOW TO CARD
DOLLHOUSE MAKEOVER MATERIALS
- Dollar Tree Doll House (from Dollar Tree)
- Sponge Brush
- Mod Podge
- Black Paint
- Silver and Gold Rub ‘n Buff
- Vellum
- Battery Operated Purple Mini Lights (from Dollar Tree)
- Optional: Bat Rings (from Dollar Tree)
- A piece of thin cardboard (cereal box) cut the size of the bottom of the house.
STEP 1: DOLL HOUSE MAKEOVER
PAINT HOUSE WITH MOD PODGE (this will help the paint have something to grab onto). THE MOD PODGE DRIES CLEAR.
IT ONLY TAKES A TINY BIT OF RUB ‘N BUFF.
ADD SMUDGES OF SIVER AND GOLD RUB ‘N BUFF.
- Paint the entire house with Mod Podge and let it dry. Adding a coat of Mod Podge before the paint will allow for an even coat without smudging.
- Give the house a good coat of black acrylic paint and a sponge brush.
- Once the paint is dry, add smudges of gold and silver and rub ‘n buff. TIP: If you get too much of the gold or silver, add a smudge of black paint over the rub and buff.
- Cut pieces of vellum to fit the interior portion of the windows. Hot glue vellum in place. Avoid getting glue on the open window portion and only around the interior edge.
- Cut the ring portion from the bats and hot glue it to the roof of the house.
- Add the purple lights to the inside of the house. TIP: Tape the lights down to make sure they stay by the windows.
- With your dollhouse transformed into haunted a dwelling, you’re now ready to move on to assembling the final spooky scene for your Halloween cake.

MY FAVORITE GEL FOOD COLORING
No more storing bottles and bottles of gel food coloring! I found this kit at Walmart. The kits come in pastel and vibrant. Six bottles are all you need to create a multitude of colors!
- Create custom color palettes for cake batter, icing, and more in vibrant or pastel shades with this food coloring set
- Bottles are designed to disperse the same size drop every time for optimal color
- Use the QuickCount chart to find the perfect color combinations or create your own
TIME-SAVING CAKE DECORATING TIP
Once the cake layers have completely cooled, trim off the tops of the cake layers to create a nice flat surface. Wrap the layers up in plastic wrap and foil. Freeze until ready to decorate. This step will allow you to skip the crumb coat but isn’t necessary.
DARK CHOCOLATE FROSTING INSTRUCTIONS
- Add the shortening, cocoa powder, sugar, and milk.
- Beat on medium-high until the frosting is light and fluffy (about 3 minutes).
- Add a swipe of frosting to the cake plate or cardboard piece, and place the purple cake layer onto the cake place or cake cardboard.
- Add frosting to the top of the purple cake layer, place the orange cake layer on top, add a layer of frosting to the top of the orange cake layer, and add the green cake layer on top of the orange cake layer.
- Cover the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.
- While the frosting is soft, press Oreo crumbs to the sides and top of the cake. NOTE: I let the crumbs pile up at the bottom to hide the cardboard cake board.
STEP3: DECORATING YOUR SEMI-HOMEMADE HALLOWEEN CAKE
Now that the haunted house is finished and the cake is done, it’s time to move on to decorating your cake.

IS THERE ANOTHER OPTION FOR MAKING THE BUSHES?
I LOVE THE WHIMSICAL LOOK!
If you are having a hard time finding the porcupine balls (I found mine at Dollar Tree). Another option would be artificial plants. I recommend using a plastic plant cut into small pieces. I love the whimsy look of the balls and the colors.
CAKE DECORATING INSTRUCTIONS
- Use a sharp knife and a cutting board to cut the porcupine balls in half. These balls serve as bushes for the yard.
- Add a dollop of brown gel food coloring to a paper towel (wear gloves) and paint the appetizer sticks and skewers with the gel. Wipe off any excess, and place on a piece of wax paper to dry.
- Print and cut the moon, bats, and trees. NOTE: The trees come in two sizes, small and large. You can make medium-sized trees by stacking two small trees. Stack two large trees to create tall trees. SCROLL DOWN FOR THE FREE PRINTABLE COLLECTION↓
- Glue bat cutouts to pieces of thin black wire (26 gauge from Dollar Tree)
- Make a cone from the tree cutouts and tape closed.
- I made three large trees (2 large tree pieces stacked together on one skewer), three medium trees ( 2 small tree pieces stacked together on one skewer), and two small trees.
- Place the cardboard cut out where you would like the house to be positioned.
- Carefully place the house (with the lights inside) on top of the cardboard.
- Position the moon and trees.
- Add bats from the back.
- Make the rock path, and add the bushes and fence.
CAN I USE WOOD STAIN INSTEAD OF BROWN GEL FOOD COLORING?
NO, the products will be touching the frosting. To keep everything food safe you MUST use gel food coloring.
