How to Make Homemade Magic Shell
Why is this Magic Shell recipe better than store bought?
- You can control the ingredients (use good chocolate or flavored baking chips)
- Easy recipe
- Endless original flavors ( like peanut butter magic shell) you can’t get at a grocery store.
MAGIC SAUCE INGREDIENTS LIST-full recipe below in recipe card
- 1 (11 ounce) bag baking chips
- 3 ounces refined coconut oil or virgin coconut oil
- pinch of salt
EASY HOMEMADE MAGIC SHELL RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS
- Add baking chips, coconut oil, and salt to a microwave safe bowl.
- Heat on high 1 minute.
- Stir until smooth.
- Chips should be melted but if they aren’t heat in 30 second increments at 60% power.
- Let the magic shell slightly cool. The mixture should be a little warm or room temperature so that it remains a liquid.
- If the magic sauce hardens (cold room temperature), warm it just enough to make it liquid. Whisk before using.
- DO NOT REFRIGERATE-Store in an airtight container ( I prefer a mason jar) at room temperature.
How Does Magic Shell Work?
Magic Shell gets its magical instant-hardening ability from coconut oil and cocoa butter that are high in saturated fat. As temperature drops, saturated fats harden, and coconut oil, in particular, turns firm, almost glassy, when cold. CLICK HERE FOR MY TRADITIONAL CHOCOLATE SAUCE RECIPE→HOT FUDGE SAUCE
What Chocolate Should I Use?
Any baking chips will work. I suggest using a high quality chips brand made with good ingredients. The Ghirardelli brand has good chocolate with a nice variety of favors. Use either baking chips or baking bars. Both have the same ingredients and will react the same. The real star of a successful hard shell is the coconut oil. Not for flavor but for the hard shell.
Ice Cream Bars for Dipping and Ice Cream Cakes for Coating
Below is a list of homemade ice cream bars and ice cream cake recipes that will also be great with this easy homemade version of store bought magic shell.
- ICE CREAM BARS: Magic Shell was made for dipping! Cream custom unique bars.
- ICE CREAM CAKE: Add another layer of flavor to your homemade ice cream cake. For a two layer cake, add ice cream to the bottom layer (like in this Birthday Party Ice Cream Cake Recipe) of the cake, add a generous layer of magic shell, and next layer of cake. DELICIOUS!
Can I Use Other Flavored Chips to Make this Magic Shell Recipe?
Yes you can! Any flavor of baking chips will work. Below is a list of my favorite combinations.

- STRAWBERRY ICE CREAM + WHILE CHOCOLATE CHIPS

How to Store Homemade Magic Shell
Leftover magic shell should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature. DO NOT REFRIGERATE. If refrigerated or stored in a cool place, Magic Shell topping will harden. Run container under hot water or microwave in 15 second increments until the hard shell is liquefied BUT NOT HOT.
How to Use Magic Shell
If simply pouring magic shell over a bowl of ice cream wasn’t enough, I have a few other uses for you to try. Please keep in mind, the magic shell stays liquefied until added to something cold and will become soft when it reaches room temperature.
- SUGAR CONE: The best part about eating a store bought drumstick is the thick layer of chocolate at the bottom of the cone. Use your magic shell to recreate the chocolate layer. The chocolate layer is not only delicious but it also creates a barrier between the hole at the bottom and the ice cream. No more drips! Spoon magic shell into each cone, place upright in the refrigerator to harden.
- ICE CREAM CONE: Just like the big dipped cones at Dairy Queen, now you can recreate dipped cones in your own kitchen! Scoop ice cream onto cone, dip in magic shell and ENJOY! The shell should harden almost immediately.
- GOURMET POPSICLES: Dip store bought popsicles into the magic hard shell, place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Store in the freezer until ready to serve or eat. NOTE: The shell will harden very quickly. If you want to add toppings have them ready to go and work fast. Another option is adding a fine drizzle of another chocolate. Example: Dark Chocolate base with a White Chocolate drizzle.
- CHOCOLATE DIPPED FRUIT: Orange slices, tangerine slices, whole strawberries, pineapple slices, pitted cherries, and bananas are all good fruits that work very well with chocolate. Dip fruit in chocolate magic shell, place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and refrigerate until hardened (about 15-20 minutes). Store in an airtight container and refrigerate until ready to eat.
- ICE CREAM SANDWICH POP: Insert a popsicle stick into the sandwich, dip in magic shell and add sprinkles.
- PRETZEL RODS: Dip pretzels in hard shell, place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment or wax paper. Place in the refrigerator to harden. Once hardened if you would like a thicker layer of chocolate, give the pretzels and second dip. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
Can I use No Sugar Added Baking Chips?
