How to Make Jack-O-Lantern Caramel Apples
- Wash and dry apples making sure to remove the wax layer.
- Stand apples so the stem side faces up. Slice down on each side of the middle (core).
- Dry off any apple juices and water.
- Making sure the apple is completely dry, wrap a caramel wrapple around the apple slice. IMPORTANT: It’s very important there are not rips in the caramel or holes. As the apple sits it will produce juice and try to seep out of the sliced apple.
- Press stick into the top of the apple.
- In a glass microwave safe container (jar or cup), that is deeper and wider than the sliced apples. Add the orange melting candy. Heat 1 minute, stir until melted and creamy. If the candy is not melted, continue heating in 30 second increments.
- Dip caramel coated apple slice in melted candy, immediately cover with orange sugar sprinkles.
- Place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Continue with remaining apple slices.
- Place coated caramel apple slices in the refrigerator to harden the candy (about 10 minutes).
- Meanwhile prepare the black candy.
- Pour candy into a small microwave safe container, heat 1 minute, stir until melted and creamy. If the candy is not melted, continue heating in 30 second increments. Pour melted candy into a squeeze bottle.
- Using the squeeze bottle nozzle, draw a face on the apple over the orange sugar sprinkles. Once the face is drawn on the apple, sprinkle black sugar sprinkles over the face. Set aside to harden. Continue with remaining apple slices.
Another Caramel Option
While I love using the Wrapples to make caramel apples the sad thing is that they are a seasonal item (I usually find them in the produce department at my grocery store next to the apples display). So, if you can’t find the Wrapples I have a solution that tastes just as good (maybe even better) and still DOESN’T require any hot sugar!
MAKE YOUR OWN WRAPPLES WITH WRAPPED KRAFT CARAMELS! •Unwrap 6-7 caramels per slice •Place in a small microwave safe bowl •Heat 10 seconds (DO NOT melt, you should be able to mold the caramel) •Place caramel between two sheets of parchment paper •Roll into a 5 inch circle, peel from paper and wrap around apple slice. THIS CAN BE DONE DAYS IN ADVANCE.
Homemade Caramel Apples
I love the deep rich caramel flavor these apples offer. With ingredients like dark corn syrup, maple syrup and molasses your know you’re getting the best caramel apple recipe.
How to Save Leftover Melted Candy
Don’t throw your extra melted candy away. Pour it into a zip top bag, lay it flat to harden, and store at room temperature up to 3 months. When ready to use it again, break off what you need (if you added vegetable shortening don’t add more) and melt.
The Best Apples for Caramel Apples
Sour apples like Granny Smith, Braeburn, Pink Lady, and Cortland are the perfect choice. The sourness of the apple paired with the sweetness of the caramel and candy coating create the perfect chewy caramel apple.
Orange and Black Melting Candy
Candy Melts, Sweetshop Melt’ems, and Sweet Tooth Fairy….any brand will work for this caramel apple recipe.

Apples have a natural wax coating, and sometimes, an additional food-grade wax coating is added to preserve the apples. The wax is safe to eat, but the caramel doesn’t stick to the wax very well.
You can use any variety of apple you enjoy such as Granny Smith, Fuji, or Honeycrisp. Granny Smith are a popular choice for caramel apples because they’re tart, which pairs perfectly with sweet buttery caramel.
Using cold apples is super helpful because it will allow the hot caramel to set faster and adhere to the apple when you go to dip them.
A few hours is fine, unfortunately, people usually set caramel dipped apples out at room temperature for days. This is enough time for bacteria to grow.
