Old Fashioned Southern Banana Pudding Dessert

With layers of homemade vanilla custard, vanilla wafers, fresh banana slices and homemade whipped topping, this is the dessert you remember as a kid. Old Fashioned Southern Banana Pudding Dessert
It's not a potluck until someone shows up with a banana pudding dessert!
Ingredients
- 8 large egg yolks
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 4½ cups whole milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 (11 ounce) box vanilla wafers
- 6 medium bananas, sliced
- 1 recipe Sweet Vanilla Whip Cream (link below)
Instructions
For the Pudding:
In a large bowl, whisk together egg yolks and sugar, set aside. In a large saucepan, add flour and salt. Whisk in milk and vanilla. Bring the milk mixture to a simmer over medium heat, whisking constantly. remove from heat, whisk 1 cup milk mixture into the egg mixture. Whisk the egg and milk mixture into the remaining hot milk.
Cook whisking constantly over medium heat, until mixture comes to a simmer. Cook, still whisking constantly until thickened (about 2-4 minutes). Remove from heat, whisk in the butter until melted.
In a 9x13-inch baking dish, layer half of the wafers, half of the banana slices and half of the pudding. Repeat layers once. Top with whip cream. Refrigerate 4 hours before serving.
