What Slow Cooker Works Best?
A 6 quart oval slow cooker or 9×13 inch casserole slow cooker works best for this cinnamon roll breakfast cake recipe.
Cinnamon Rolls VS Cinnamon Roll Cake
Why is this recipe called a cinnamon roll cake and not just cinnamon rolls? For me it’s all about the texture. Since this cinnamon roll recipe does not call for yeast, the recipe tends to be a little more cake like. Add in the slow cooker cooking method and the texture is more cake like than a cinnamon roll.

- MAKE THE DOUGH: In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda. Using a pastry blender, cut in the butter until pieces are pea size. Stir in half-and-half.
- SHAPE THE ROLLS: Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead gently for 10 to 15 strokes until dough is smooth. Roll dough into a 15×10-inch rectangle.
- BROWN SUGAR FILLING: Spread butter over dough. In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar, brown sugar, cornstarch, and cinnamon. Sprinkle over butter. Roll up dough from the short side. Pinch and seal seams. Slice into 10 rolls.
- SLOW COOKER: Line the bottom of a 6-quart oval slow cooker or a 9×13 inch (3½ quart) slow cooker with parchment paper allowing enough excess to go halfway up the sides of the slow cooker. Arrange rolls, cut side down, in prepared cooker. Sprinkle any excess sugar mixture over rolls. Place a paper towel right under the lid (not on the rolls) of the slow cooker—this will help keep condensation off of the cooking rolls. DO NO LEAVE THIS STEP OUT AND DO NOT USE A CLOTH TOWEL. Cook on high for 2 hours. Using the parchment paper, lift the rolls out of the slow cooker right away.
- ICING: Let cinnamon rolls rest 30 minutes before adding icing. In a medium bowl, beat together the cream cheese, butter, and vanilla until combined. Add powdered sugar, beat until combined. Stir in milk. Spread on cooled cinnamon roll breakfast cake.
What is a Pastry Blender?
A pastry blender is a cooking utensil used to mix hard fat into flour in order to make pastries. The tool is usually made of narrow metal strips or wires attached to a handle, and is used by pressing down on the items to be mixed.
Toasty Cinnamon Rolls
If you like your cinnamon rolls a little brown on top, using the parchment paper, lift the cinnamon rolls out of the slow cooker and place on a baking sheet. Bake at 300° for 5-10 minutes.
How to Make Jam Filled Cinnamon Roll Breakfast Cake
Fruit, sugar, and cinnamon go perfectly together! The combo creates a cobbler like taste. The ONLY change to the recipe is the addition of your favorite jam. Spread butter over dough, spread ¾ cup jam (raspberry, blueberry, strawberry, etc.), sprinkle brown sugar mixture over the jam. Roll up, slice and cook in the slow cooker 2 hours.
How to Make a Cream Cheese Drizzle
The ingredients are the same as the cream cheese icing EXCEPT for the milk. The recipe for the icing calls for 2 tablespoons of milk. In addition to the 2 tablespoons add an additional ½ tablespoon. Keep adding small amounts until the icing reaches a drizzle consistency.
